THE PROJECT
CROC! Lost Giants to Living Legends explores 130 million years of crocodilian evolution through science, First Nations knowledge, cultural stories and immersive media.
Created and Produced by Queensland Museum, Australian National Maritime Museum and Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the major touring exhibition premiered at Queensland Museum Kurilpa in 2025.
THE MUSIC
The musical language was developed from crocodilian vocalisations, intrinsically connecting the
compositions to the subject.
Three approximately nine-minute soundscapes were composed to operate continuously across the multi-room exhibition. Each needed enough variation for extended listening while looping seamlessly throughout the visitor experience.
For the long-extinct Sarcosuchus, recordings of baby crocodilians were transformed into increasingly large and powerful vocal forms, imagining the voice of an animal that disappeared millions of years ago.
Gary also consulted on the wider exhibition audio, including playback, levels and the relationship between its different sound components.
