Woolmark "Still Spinning"
60th Anniversary Film · 2024
Music Composition · Sound Design
THE PROJECT
Created to celebrate 60 years of the Woolmark symbol, Still Spinning moves through six decades of changing fashion and culture.
Working with Creative Director Mitchell Oakley Smith, the soundtrack was conceived as a journey through recognisable musical styles and eras, using original music and sound design to locate the audience in time and move the film forward.
THE MUSIC
The score moves rapidly between different musical styles, using rhythm, instrumentation, production and arrangement to establish each period within a very short timeframe.
Music and sound design were developed together. Sonic elements from one era are used to disrupt, transform or transition into the next, allowing very different musical languages to coexist within a single soundtrack.
Some transitions emerge through subtle shifts in texture, frequency and rhythm; others use sudden changes in scale, energy and arrangement. The challenge was not simply to reproduce recognisable styles, but to understand what makes them distinctive, distil those characteristics and reinterpret them within an original composition.
Despite the rapid stylistic changes, recurring musical and sonic relationships give the soundtrack continuity. The result is deliberately varied but cohesive: a concise musical journey through 60 years of cultural change.

“Gary brought an enormous musical vocabulary to Still Spinning. The film moves quickly through different eras and styles, and he found ways to make those transitions feel natural while keeping the soundtrack coherent. He’s a generous and genuinely collaborative composer, with a strong musical point of view and an openness to where the creative process might lead.” Mitchell Oakley Smith
